Energetics: the broad scientific study of energy, its transformation and its balance within a specific system.
My work emerges from expeditions into my imagined version of the space between what we perceive and what is ever present. During each image-making session, I manipulate the camera's exposure and optical settings, use spontaneous physical movement, and adjust the playback of colorful imagery on a monitor. These actions allow me to travel into and explore this unseen layer via my camera's viewfinder. The resulting art works include the large-scale photographs in my Experiments in Color Abstraction series and the photographic sculptures that contain stored energy from this Energetics series.
Embodied Energy Grids are photographic sculptures arranged in reconfigurable grids. Each of the sculpture can be rotated in 4 directions and placed in any position in the grid, with the shape of the grid responding to the space it is displayed in. The grid system functions to illustrate the near infinite possibilities of the universe that when observed collapse into a definitive state. In a grid of 21 sculptures if you were to move them into a new arrangement every second it would take over 13 billion years to work through every configuration possible.
Optical Resonance Artifact series is demonstrated by storing elastic potential energy in the scoring and folds of the photograph and capturing and re-emitting photonic energy as light passes through the acrylic component and creates a color shadow. This series further explores how imagery derived from light is transformed into a sculptural form that embodies color and creates a visible vibration of energy.
Embodied energy Nodes are photographic sculptures that contain stored elastic potential energy. The photographs in each node are from my expeditions to my imagined liminal state and then I impart energy into them through scoring and folding them and then applying adhesive that as it dries distributes the stored mechanical potential energy evenly along the entire surface and locking the energy into the node.
